What’s the Difference Between Home Health Care and Hospice?

When you have an aging or ill family member sometimes you need help caring for them but you don’t know what type of care they need. Two types of care often considered are home health care and hospice care. But what is the difference?

  • Home health care helps you to get better from an illness or injury. It can also be used to manage a long term illness such as diabetes for home bound people. Services provided include physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and infusion therapy.
  • Hospice care focuses on improving end of life care for the terminally ill. It provides care when a patient’s focus is on quality of life and pain management as opposed to curative medicine. A hospice care plan usually includes your doctor or the hospice company doctor, nurses trained in pain and symptom management, personal care aides to help with bathing and grooming, a pastor/chaplain for spiritual guidance, support for the family members, and volunteers to spend time with the patient.

Additional information regarding Medicare’s coverage of these services is available on their website.  For home health information, click here.  For hospice information, click here.
